Tricks to Predict the Weather at Sea

If you’ve traveled on a luxury catamaran cruise with an experienced Captain, you’d know that at sea, he’s the god. He calls the shots, predicts the weather, and handles the steering and the sails. And that makes you wonder how do they know so much?

Well, experience teaches you a lot of things that books and degrees can’t. But as far as weather forecasting goes, sailors have mastered this art by following the elements. The sun, moon, and winds are the North Star that guide them through the navigation at sea.

Want to know some of their secret tricks to tell when it’s going to rain or not?

Look at the Sun and the Moon

If you look closely, there’ll always be concentric circles around the sun and the moon when there’s a cyclone in the making.

If the solar or lunar disks are bent at the rise and decline, there’s possibly a drought or anti-cyclone in store for you.

However, a pretty pinkish-yellow sight at dawn promises a clear day with good weather and no precipitation. But the elements have a mind of their own, and nature’s doings don’t follow a formula so expect things to go awry at unexpected times. Make sure you consult the sailor before booking your trip.

The Stars Blink a Sign

The twinkling and flickering of stars is not just a mesmerizing beauty to look at but also brings the glad tidings of pleasant weather. If there’s a greenish tinge around them, you can get your best dress out for a day on the deck.

However, if the stars are bright and unblinking, that means the sky is clear, and it’ll bring rain on the morrow. Get your rubber boots and raincoats out!

Color of the Clouds

Fluffy white clouds on a blue sky.

This is easy to guess: clouds growing in size and volume are harbingers of a rainstorm.

If you see large fluffy clouds in an oval shape, you can expect the sails to fill up with wind because it’ll be strong. This is also the case if the clouds are speeding past you over your head.

If the clouds are heavy and hanging low around midday and disappearing right after, you can expect a clear sky for the next couple of hours. Plan your activities accordingly.
