5 Sailing Safety Tips You Must Know

Spending a day out at sea is a great way to relax. However, when you are onboard, you must remember that safety is of paramount importance. Everyone onboard should be aware of the safety guidelines to minimize the likelihood of danger.

Here are five sailing safety tips to keep you safe on your next trip.

Locate All Life Jackets

Did you know that 84% of all boating deaths in the U.S. occur because passengers do not wear life jackets?

At Cabo Yacht World, every yacht charter journey begins with a safety briefing in which life jacket locations are highlighted as per federal law. However, we realize that passengers may forget to put on their life jackets. Should this happen to you, we recommend asking our crew immediately.

Bring Your Own Whistle

The U.S. Coast Guard requires all boats to be equipped with signaling devices such as whistles. However, these are often solely for the crew to use during emergencies.

Therefore, we recommend bringing your own whistle in case of an emergency, as it can increase your chances of survival in an emergency.

Carry a Rechargeable Flashlight

The likelihood of rainfall in Cabo San Lucas is extremely low—but it’s not impossible. In case rainfall reduces visibility on your yacht, we recommend carrying your own rechargeable flashlight. This will also help the crew locate you during an emergency.

Book the Right Sized Yacht

Every yacht has a certain passenger capacity that must not be exceeded as per U.S. Coast Guard advice. For example, at Cabo Yacht World, the 100 Foot Azimut carries up to 15 guests, while the 55 foot Azimut carries up to 10 guests. We recommend booking the right-sized yacht to prevent safety risks arising from overloading.

Listen To the Crew

This is perhaps the most important tip of all. With over 10 years of experience, the crew at Cabo Yacht World is highly skilled in taking care of guests. Should they instruct you to remain indoors, please do so for your own safety. Pay attention to their safety briefings, and cooperate with them at all times.

With over 10 different types of yachts, Cabo Yacht World provides some of the best yacht rentals in Cabo San Lucas. For a truly memorable experience, book our stunning 630 MY Lagoon Catamaran—a 63-foot luxury yacht equipped with everything from a viewing deck to jet skis and kayaks.
