Humpback whales are a rare species; most people want to encounter them at least once in their life. That’s where Cabo San Lucas comes in; humpback whales are commonly sighted there.
The warm waters of Cabo attract these magnificent creatures in large numbers. The humpback whales that visit Cabo are part of the North Eastern Pacific Population. The population of whales around the area grows by 23,000 every year, on average.
This population is still under threat of extinction despite its growth levels. The alarming pollution levels and environmental degradation have put the health of these creatures at risk.
Humpback whale migration
Humpback whales migrate to the warm waters of Cabo San Lucas from November to April. Cabo is located at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, giving guests the opportunity to watch and study the species very closely. The females return every year to mate and calve. They spend the winter and spring months here and then move south to the Sea of Cortez.
Humpback whales can be seen migrating to the south between November–December, and back to the North between March–April. They migrate between British Columbia and California.
The route they take is often along the coastline. Humpback whales can migrate in as soon as 40 days. They move at around 6 to 8 km/h.
The warm waters of Cabo are their feeding grounds. They eat smaller fish and krill, and are known to consume over a thousand kilos a day.
Humpback whale mating and calving
The population of humpback whales in Cabo San Lucas reaches its peak during December and January. These three months are a crucial mating season for the whales. The females then migrate to the north to feed and prepare for pregnancy.
Cabo San Lucas is rich when it comes to its topographical profile. The shallow bays protect pregnant females and shelter them for calving and nursing. They give birth during January. The whales spotted during this time of the year are mostly mothers and their babies.
Baby whales weight between 500 to 600kgs and are born light grey in color. Sun exposure causes them to become darker in color.
