Fishing in Shallow Water—4 Pro Secrets That You Should Know

Contrary to popular belief, shallow waters are home to some really interesting fish species. Also known as skinny water fishing, some of the fish you can hope to find include redfish, bonefish and striped bass—depending on the coast.

You can also find bass in shallow water during this season because this is when they go after the shad that live behind coves.

Some anglers have the experience and expertise to catch fish throughout the summer season. However, shallow water fishing is a whole different ball game that requires a different set of techniques.

Here are some tips and techniques to help you practice fishing in shallow water.

Choose your bait wisely

Bait selection is dependent on how clear the water is. For muddy waters, go for darker colored worms, whereas for more transparent waters, you can use more translucent bait.

Learn how to cast right

The best way to cast your line is underhand or sidearm; practice just a little bit of restraint so the lure doesn’t splash too much when it comes in contact with water.

Holding back is important because you don’t want to scare off any fish with too big of a splash. Consider investing in lighter lures to prevent this.

Practice pitch casting

Pitch casting can help you improve the accuracy with which you cast and is reasonably simple to learn.

All you have to do is hold your lure in one hand at roughly 3/4th the length. Stretch the rod out, so the line becomes tight, and point it in the direction you want to cast it in.

Practice the restrained motion mentioned earlier; it’s okay if you don’t get it the first time. Remember to be patient with yourself and practice exhaling when casting.

Use wacky rigs

These are perfect, especially for bass, and can move both sides in the water when baited. They make sure it doesn’t move too far from the initial cast point and will allow you to get more strikes in.
