Cabo San Lucas is known for many things, but several people don’t realize that the popular resort-town in Baja California is Mexican. With nearly 200,000 living within the city limits and around 11,000 residents more inhabiting the surrounding mountainsides—Cabo has established itself as a hotspot for culture and nightlife.
1. It’s the birthplace of tequila
The town is also known as the birthplace of tequila, which passed through many stages before being perfected in the late 1800s. Don Jose Cuervo created true tequila in 1773, but it wasn’t until his son Don Manuel decided that he wanted to make a better product that Cabo became well-known for its top-shelf beverage.
2. Chankanaab Park is the only underwater park in North America
The only underwater park in North America, Chankanaab Park, is filled with various marine life, including rays, sharks, sea turtles, and manta rays. Marine biologists don’t usually suggest swimming with manta rays. Still, the brilliant creatures often swim up to the surface of the water just outside of Chankanaab Park, where tourists are more than happy to take a dip.
The park also has an extensive collection of native species living on land, including monkeys and parrots.
3. Cabo is declared a protected area by the Mexican government
The Cabo-San Lucas National Marine Park protects the waters around the town of San Lucas and extends into the waters of Baja California Sur. The park was first created in 1973 but expanded in 2013 to include 96,000 square miles of ocean and land to protect the environment from pollution and ecological damage.
As part of this expansion, a new marine highway was built, which opened the way for more sport fishing and tourist ventures and created a safer work environment for marine scientists and conservationists who monitor water quality.
4. Cabo is famous for its variety of sandy beaches
There are around 20 beaches within Cabo San Lucas and a few more located in the surrounding mountains. The Pacific Ocean offers impressive views, sunrises, and sunsets, while tropical storms from November to March create constant surf and strong waves.
